POVERTY ALLEVIATION
Nepal has an average GDP per capita of US$260 (2004), making it the poorest country in South Asia and the twelfth poorest country in the world. 46% of the population of Nepal currently lives under the poverty line. Overall, poverty tends to affect to a greater extent agricultural wage earners, landless or small land holding people and illiterates. Similarly, in terms of caste and ethnic groups, Hill and Terai Dalits represent the poorest segment of the population.
