CHILD PROTECTION AND RIGHTS
The heaviest impacts of poverty and the recent armed conflict in Nepal often fall on children. According to UNICEF, more than 50,000 children die in Nepal each year, with malnutrition as the underlying cause for more than 60% of these deaths. Nepal's infant mortality rate is amongst the highest in the world with 59 out of 1000 children under one year age dying. Around 2.6 million are working children. Furthermore, as a result of the strife, children's rights are profoundly violated on a daily basis. The conflict had a significant impact on education as it forced closures of schools due to strikes, school years were cut in half in some areas and thousands of students were taken from school for political indoctrination, with some even being recruited into the Maoist forces or militia. Over 40,000 Nepalese children are estimated to have been displaced over the course of the Maoist uprising.
