ONGOING PROJECTS
  • CASA Nepal - Micro Action Shelter Project

Period: 2006 AD - ongoing
Overview: In an effort to address the fundamental rights of women, SAHARA Group in a partnership with Apeiron Nepal, has launched the Casa Nepal Program. This program addresses women - alone or with children - victims of violence or discrimination or experiencing severe economic and social difficulties. Casa Nepal Program provides them with long lasting skills training in order to allow them on the long run to gain some independence. Women who benefit from this project are then involved in a continuous program of rehabilitation consisting in discussions on key issues concerning their daily life, in meetings with counselors and psychologists and in courses of non-formal education. After that training and rehabilitation period, women are helped to find jobs or to start small businesses.
Objectives:
  • Provide women with vocational and life skills training
  • Provide children with educational sponsorship
  • Provide women and children at risk with food, accommodation, healthcare and education opportunities
  • Give women a job and a valorized role/place in the society after having provided them with relevant vocational and life skills training
Activities: Preliminary Phase:
  • Establishment of a shelter/residential facility where selected women were to be placed
Rehabilitation phase:
  • Establishment of in-house working groups to carry out everyday chores such as housekeeping, cooking and support
  • Rehabilitation activities such as: dance, art, literature, tai-chi, excursions, human rights and gender classes, among others
Income generation training and children sponsorship phase:
  • Food production and house-keeping training; security guard training; thangka painting training; sewing and tailoring training; dhaka weaving training; candle manufacturing training; rural animator training; incense production training; felt production training
  • Children sponsorship
Phase out stage:
  • Once rehabilitation and trainings will be completed, facilitation for employment, job-placement and small scale business installations, will be provided.
Achievements:
  • A total of 72 women have benefited from vocational and life skills trainings
  • 87% of those women were successfully placed in a job and are now able to support themselves and their children
  • 24 children got sponsors for the provision of their basic education
