- Outreach Health Service for Street Children in Kathmandu Valley

| Overview: |
By the time of the project implementation, an estimated 900 children were living in the streets of Kathmandu. These children often lack of proper shelter, security and food which coupled with the lifestyle and habits they acquire while living on the streets, greatly increase their risk of developing deplorable health conditions. In an effort to help alleviate these conditions, SAHARA Group in partnership with the Australian Embassy and Save the Children Norway-Nepal, developed and implemented the project of Outreach Health Service for Street Children in Kathmandu. The aim of this program was to provide health services to street children on the spot, while at the same time provide counseling and reintegration services when possible. Working stations were set up on several city spots for the provision of treatment and counseling services. |
| Objectives: |
- To provide health, counseling and reintegration services to street children
- To provide counseling and awareness campaigns about HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis B and the negative effects of drugs, amongst street children

| Activities: |
- Medical and special teams went on location to seek for sick street children
- Provision of medical support and medicines for needy children and referral to various hospitals and clinics when necessary
- Counseling services
- Reintegration services
- Snacks and food distribution for street children
- Provision of some non formal educational classes to children
- Provision of clothes

| Achievements: |
- More than 400 children got medical check-up and medicinal support
- Complete health records were made for 230 children
- Four children were successfully reintegrated with their families and follow-up was done with these four reintegration cases
- Specialized medical treatment was successfully provided on the spots
- Successful referral of patients to hospitals for relevant medical treatment
- Research on HIV/AIDS awareness and infection rate were made
