- Emergency Intervention for Rag- picking Children and Youth in Kathmandu Valley who are Injecting Drug Users at risk of, or already suffering from, HIV+
| Period: |
2003 - 2005 AD |
| Overview: |
By 2003 there was an estimate of 5000 street children living within Nepal from which almost 4000 were to be involved in rag picking activities. Many health issues such as malnutrition, tuberculosis, bacteria parasites and HIV/AIDS, can be attributed to rag picking. Moreover, rag pickers tend to resort to theft, prostitution and drug use when earnings from rag picking are insufficient. In an attempt to assist child rag pickers to leave aside their hazardous activities, SAHARA Group launched an Emergency Intervention for Rag- picking Children and Youth who are Injecting Drug Users at risk of, or already suffering from, HIV+ program. This program aimed at providing positive interventions, detoxification and rehabilitation programs, designed specifically for rag picking children. |
