Volunteer Service

 

SAHARA Group (Social Awareness and Helping Activities in Rural Areas) is a non-for profit organization that was registered in 1997 in Kathmandu District Administration Office. The organization has been affiliated with Social Welfare Council (SWC) in 2000. The thematic areas of the organization are governance, children and HIV/AIDS. Central, Western and Mid Western Development Region are key geographical areas of the organization since its inception.

Apart from the implementation of various projects in its thematic areas, the organization has been encouraging volunteerism in Nepal and Abroad. Focusing on volunteer exchange programme to create the learning environment for the young learner and social service oriented professional people from Nepal and Abroad, cross cultural studies and volunteerism promotion activities are set to implement in the near future.

The volunteers from abroad will be placed in its geographical working areas i.e. Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Lalitpur, Pokhara, Gorkha, Nepalgunj, Dailekh, Surkhet, Jajarkot, Dolpa, Humla etc. The volunteer will choose the areas stay with the support of SAHARA.

A sample outline for a 10-week placement is as follows:
Day 01 Welcome and introduction to key people and a welcome dinner
Day 02 Orientation, introductions, what will happen during their stay, who to go to with questions and for support, introduction to Kathmandu
Day 03 Begin Nepali language classes
Day 04-06 Each morning Nepali classes, afternoon mixture of group activities, cultural visits (sightseeing) and at leisure.
Day 07 Meet a person from the family they will be staying with and person from where they will be working, afternoon to prepare to leave next day and evening group dinner.
Day 08 Anyone who will work outside Kathmandu travels today with co-ordinator/guid
Day 09 Introduction to workplace colleagues and area/general orientation and gentle start to work
Day 10-14 Work (with weekends free)
Week 3 As above, meet at end of week in Kathmandu to discuss work and socialise
Week 4 As above, weekend safari and white water rafting
Week 5 Work, weekly group meeting at end of week
Week 6 As above
Week 7 As above, 1-2 day visit to see what work other volunteers are doing on other projects
Week 8 Last week of project work, say goodbye to families and colleagues and group evaluation meeting for last 1-2 days of this week e.g. what have they been doing, good things, bad things, how do they feel etc normal evaluation
Week9-10 Trek to EBC and on return to Kathmandu before departure group celebration dinner
  On return to home location – optional weekend meeting to discuss and meet up again with other volunteers – this will be an optional activity.
